Google has been THE search engine for so long that it has been hard to remember when the demands of its algorithm didn’t dominate how companies pursued online visibility. But now a new Vox Media survey shows that what was once the absolute go-to for finding things on the internet is losing its appeal. In the survey, 42% of respondents said that Google Search and search engines in general are becoming less useful. That prompts two key questions: Where are those abandoning Google getting their information? And what is driving this change?
That same survey reveals that 52% of respondents use AI (artificial intelligence) chatbots or alternative platforms for information instead of Google. Considering that generative search and AI are such a relatively recent phenomenon, the speed at which the general public is adopting a new paradigm for finding what they’re looking for online should be alarming for companies and brands that are clinging to old digital marketing methods. It’s even more revealing that the rate at which AI tools have been adopted rises sharply among younger generations—53% of millennials and 61% of Gen Z use AI tools to find information instead of Google or traditional search engines.
The takeaway here is that companies that have not been adjusting their marketing strategies to adapt to generative search are already behind the curve. This is not simply a case of individuals hopping on the bandwagon of new technology, either. Further survey results illuminate that users aren’t just being attracted to something new—they’re also being driven away by the declining quality of what they’re finding through Google.
The word “google” turned into a synonym for “looking for information online” because at one point it was the quickest and easiest way to surface exactly what you were looking for. The survey digs into some of the reasons for the loss of confidence in the platform, with grim feedback. Fully two-thirds of respondents (66%) said the quality of information is deteriorating, making it difficult to find reliable sources. And 76% noted that more than a quarter of Google Search shopping results appeared “to be sponsored or promoted.” How damaging is this perception? Only 14% rated those sponsored or promoted results as “very helpful.”
When users are confronted with results that feel inauthentic and unhelpful, undermining their trust in Google’s brand, they go elsewhere. This provides two significant lessons for businesses seeking to enhance their own digital marketing strategy. First, they need to be optimizing to be discoverable through generative search now. The old days of traditional search engines being the only game in town are never coming back. Second, people crave authenticity, connection, and trust in their interaction with brands. Building those experiences are crucial for attracting and retaining a loyal customer base.
It’s clear that a growing number of users are happy to have AI do the digging and data crunching involved in online search, but does that mean your company should be handing every possible task over to ChatGPT? Not so fast. At the same time that people are rapidly adopting certain AI tools, they’re wary of ways in which AI might be impacting the authentic experience they’re looking for. 81% of survey participants said they were debating if content they were seeing on social media was partially or entirely AI generated, and nearly half said they would rather be part of a community that does not allow AI-generated content. High quality content was also rated as being critical for building community and connection (78%).
Does that mean AI has no role in your content creation? No. AI tools can be deployed effectively for personalization and used for data analysis to refine messaging. But it can’t and shouldn’t replace human creativity and insight in creating your brand’s identity and voice. This important distinction means that companies must be strategic in how they incorporate AI tools into their marketing efforts.
