It’s no secret where major tech giants fall on the question of AI technology. Most of them have been investing heavily in AI, rapidly integrating it across their products and services. However, the latest move by the Trump administration makes it clear that far from throwing obstacles in the way of AI, the U.S. intends to hit the gas on AI development in an effort to dominate this field of technological innovation.
As reported by the BBC, the administration has introduced a 28-page AI Action Plan that lays out an ambitious agenda for developing artificial intelligence, pledging to remove administrative obstacles and “ideological bias.” It includes more than 90 policy actions that administration officials say can be implemented over the next year to facilitate the advancement of AI in both government and private sectors.
This attitude marks a significant shift from the previous administration, as signaled by the fact that Trump rescinded Joe Biden’s 2023 executive order calling for safety and security standards regarding the use of AI in federal government on day one of his second term in office. The message is clear that the brakes are off where AI is concerned.
What does it mean that national policy is pushing for less oversight and more speed regarding AI? Frankly, many businesses may have already felt that the AI tide has rolled right over them, especially where internet search and visibility are concerned. AI tools like Google’s AI Overviews and ChatGPT are replacing traditional search, rendering old SEO techniques irrelevant and obsolete. Instead of being able to game search results and boost visibility with the right keywords, it’s now LLMs (Large Language Models) that are determining visibility and trust with your potential audience.
When it is not only private industry pushing for AI, but also governments—the very entities that write the rules about what is allowed—it’s time to acknowledge that your marketing strategy must be designed for the new reality that AI creates. The old world of search is no longer here, and what is replacing it is moving at lightning speed. If you’re not willing to give up the field to your competitors, it’s past time to adapt.
The development of various SEO strategies over the years has familiarized many business owners with the tricks that helped connect them with potential buyers online. It can be hard to acknowledge that much of what we “know” is no longer useful, including whether click volume is a metric that matters anymore. If it’s now AI systems in charge of ranking, reading, and recommending brands to users, your content and marketing strategies must be aligned to what they’re looking for. Otherwise, your brand will disappear from the future of search entirely.
Ironically, the answer to this technological leap is not to develop a new arsenal of tactics and tricks to try to tell a machine what your ideal customer wants. It’s to reconnect with the information and answers that your audience is truly looking for and craft your content and marketing around that. For example, Google has repeatedly emphasized that it assesses the quality and credibility of content using their E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness) framework. Businesses that create high-quality, informative, original content that directly addresses the questions and concerns their clients have will be rewarded with greater reach and visibility online.
The guardrails coming off AI development means that your business’s room for error is diminishing. Effort that is spent in creating content that misses the mark on search intent or that misjudges the audience you are trying to reach is time and money wasted.
